Not because the seasonal system isn't useful (it is, as a starting framework) but because it was created more than forty years ago for a relatively narrow range of complexions, and it simply doesn't give enough precision for everyone. A system with four, twelve, or even sixteen seasons will always force some people into categories that aren't quite right.

Instead, we use the Colour Flowers — six types defined by undertone (warm or cool) and depth (light, mid-tone, or deep).

And when we look at Zendaya through that lens, we see something rather different to what most analysts are describing.

Why We Disagree With Deep Autumn

Here's where our analysis diverges from the consensus and why it matters.

Deep Autumn, as a seasonal category, is defined by depth as the dominant characteristic alongside warmth. The most typical Deep Autumn has richly pigmented, deep warm skin, very dark hair, and deep warm eyes — a colouring where the overall impression is weighted and earthy. Think Jennifer Lopez, Eva Mendes, Victoria Beckham or Jenna Ortega.

Zendaya does not have this.

In comparison with Jenna's colouring, Zendaya's colours look less deep and muted. Her contrast is lower, too. But both actresses look really warm-toned.

Zendaya's overall appearance is characterised by brightness and warmth rather than depth and earthiness. Put her in the heavy, saturated, very dark earthy shades of a classic Deep Autumn palette (dark espresso, deep burnt sienna, very warm olive) and you'll see that these colours can look slightly heavy on her. In some of those photos I couldn't even recognise her because Deep Autumn's colours are very good at disguising her visual individuality. But what happens instead when Zendaya wears lighter, warmer shades? Her famous canary yellow and dandelion-toned looks (the ones that prompted half the internet to start discussions about her style) look extraordinary on her. In deep, saturated, earthy warm shades Jennifer looks as if the colours were made specifically for her. On Zendaya, those same shades can feel slightly too weighty, slightly too dark — because her colouring simply doesn't have the same depth.
