Hazel eyes are one of the most interesting eye colours to dress around, precisely because they refuse to stay still. Depending on the light, what you're wearing, and even your mood, hazel eyes can shift between green, gold, amber, and brown. True chameleons!

This is what makes choosing the right hair colour both exciting and a little tricky. This is why I've decided to prepare this guide that, I hope, you'll find useful!

What Are Hazel Eyes, Exactly?

But first, let's have a look what hazel eyes actually mean.

Hazel eyes are a blend of brown, green, and gold with the balance varying from person to person. Some hazel eyes are predominantly green with gold flecks. Others lean more amber and brown with a hint of green at the edges. A few have a subtle blue or grey quality in certain lights. Such a big variety that no wonder it get complicated which hair colour would be able to enhance the beauty of this specific eye colour! However, before choosing the colour matching your eyes it's important to know what skin tone you have too.

Can I Match My Hair Colour To My Eyes And Not To My Skin Tone?

Unfortunately when it comes to hair colours you need to choose the one that matches not only your eye colour but your skin tone too. Why? Your hair frames your whole face, which means it needs to work with your skin tone first and your eye colour second.

This is the fundamental principle of colour analysis: your undertone, depth, and contrast all shape which shades look harmonious on you. Eye colour is a valuable guide within that picture, but it is not the whole picture.

So when you're choosing a hair colour for hazel eyes, the question isn't just "what makes hazel eyes pop?" it's "what makes my hazel eyes pop, given my specific colouring or my specific colour season?" Those are two quite different questions, and the answer to the second one is always more useful.

As in my colour analysis system I don't use colour seasons, let me introduce you to the Colour Flowers which are much more fun and contemporary alternative to the seasonal colour analysis system that was created more than forty years ago:

The main truth about hazel eyes is that you can be either a warm and a cool Colour Flower which means that different hair colours will match your colouring.

What Hair Colours Make Hazel Eyes Pop If You Are a Warm Colour Season (Spring or Autumn)?

Warm Browns and Chestnuts For Hazel Eyes

Warm brunette shades are consistently the most universally flattering for hazel eyes of your undertone is warm too.

The golden and green tones in hazel eyes are warm in quality, and warm hair shades echo and amplify those tones rather than neutralising them.

Try chestnut brown, warm chocolate or caramel shades to create a cohesive warmth between your hair and eye colour enhancing the golden flecks in your eyes.

This is a particularly strong choice if your hazel eyes lean more amber or brown which is common among the warm colour seasons (Spring, Autumn) or Colour Flowers: Marigold, Buttercup and Rudbeckia.

Auburn and Copper Hair Colour For Hazel Eyes

If you want your hazel eyes to genuinely glow, red-adjacent shades are some of the most striking choices. Auburn, copper, warm red, and russet shades sit on the opposite side of the colour wheel from the green in hazel eyes and that contrast is what makes the eyes leap forward.

This works especially well if your hazel eyes have a strong green quality. Copper hair next to green-hazel eyes creates a combination that's genuinely hard to look away from.

The key is keeping the red warm rather than cool because a warm auburn or copper works with warm hazel eyes in a way that a cool, blue-based burgundy does not.

Golden and Honey Blonde For Hazel Eyes

Warm blonde shades: honey, golden blonde, butterscotch, champagne with warm undertones, are wonderful for hazel eyes and warm undertones. These shades bring forward the gold in hazel eyes and create a bright, sunlit quality around the face.

They work amazing when you're a warm colour season (Spring, Autumn), especially if your complexion is light overall (Buttercup or Marigold Colour Flowers).

What Hair Colours Make Hazel Eyes Pop If You Are a Cool Colour Season (Summer or Winter)?

Even though all hazel eyes have some warmth in them, that doesn't automatically make you a warm colour season. Quite often, the main feature of hazel eyes isn't their warmth but their clarity or depth, sometimes with a touch of blue or grey. That's when your skin is likely to have cool undertones too, and a very different range of hair colours will suit your natural colouring.

Cool (Mocha) Browns for Hazel Eyes

If you have hazel eyes and cool undertones, don't follow the warmth in your eyes — it can be misleading and spoil the clarity of your complexion. In your case, cool or neutral dark brown hair colours will make you look fresher and more radiant while enhancing the beautiful vividness of your hazel eyes. Instead of competing with your natural colouring, they'll make your eye colour stand out even more.

How Your Colour Season Affects the Hair Colour Choice If You Have Hazel Eyes

This is where colour analysis adds a layer of clarity that generic hair colour guides can't offer.

Your colour season or Colour Flower tells you not just whether to go warm or cool, but also how light or deep your best shade should be, and how saturated or muted. Two people can both have hazel eyes and warm undertones, but one might be a Rudbeckia type who suits rich, earthy, deeply warm shades (Learn more about Rudbeckia's colour palette here) — while another might be a Buttercup type who looks best in warmer but lighter, clearer tones.

The right shade for each of them is different, even though the general direction is the same.

This is why knowing your Colour Flower gives you such a precise starting point. Instead of choosing between "warm blonde" and "auburn" based on instinct, you can choose with confidence based on what your overall colouring actually calls for.

If you've ever chosen a hair colour that seemed right on paper but didn't quite land in person, that's usually a sign that the undertone wasn't quite right for your skin, even if it was theoretically good for your eyes. Getting both right at once is where colour analysis comes in.

Wondering what your best hair colour actually is? A professional colour analysis takes the guesswork out completely — and you'll leave knowing exactly what to ask for at the salon. Submit your photos here:
