Can You Be A Light Colour Season If You Have Dark Skin?

If you've ever tried to figure out your colour season and assumed that, because you have dark skin, you must be a Dark Autumn or a Dark Winter, you're not alone. It's one of the most common misconceptions in colour analysis, and it stops countless women of colour from exploring what their best colours actually are.

So let's settle it once and for all: yes, you absolutely can be a light colour season if you have dark skin. Here's why.

The Biggest Myth in Colour Analysis

The traditional four-season colour analysis system was developed in the 1980s, predominantly with white skin tones in mind. As a result, the idea of a "light" season became visually associated with fair skin, blonde hair, and blue or green eyes. And the idea of a "dark" season became a catch-all for anyone with deeper skin.

This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how colour analysis works. Especially not ours which is built differently from the traditional seasonal colour analysis. (Read here on why I've created my own colour analysis system).

Your colour season is not determined by how dark or light your skin is. It is determined by three very different things: your undertone and your depth. And they are independent from each other. Dark skin can carry a cool undertone or a warm one, have low or high contrast and, of course, different depth.

What Actually Determines Your Colour Type

Undertone is the most important factor. It refers to the subtle colour beneath the surface of your skin: whether it leans warm (golden, peachy, yellow) or cool (pink, red, bluish). Crucially, undertone has nothing to do with how dark or light your skin is. A person with very deep skin can have a distinctly cool undertone, just as a person with fair skin can have a warm one.

Depth is how light or dark your overall colouring is. Yes, this is where skin tone plays a role but it is only one of three factors, not the defining one. And dark skin doesn't mean deep colour depth, I'll show what I mean later on.

So Can Dark Skin Be A Light Colour Type?

Yes, and here is how.

A light colour season (such as Light Spring or Light Summer) is defined by a colouring where lightness is the dominant characteristic. The most prominent thing about someone's overall look is a delicate, airy quality: soft features, low contrast, a gentle rather than striking presence.

Now, can this exist in darker skin? Absolutely.

The dominant quality of this person's colouring is not darkness. The colours that will look best are actually gentle, and light, not heavy, rich, or deeply saturated. Putting them in dark chocolate brown or deep burgundy could actually overwhelm their features, even though their skin is deep.

This is why draping (holding actual colour swatches next to the face) is the only reliable way to find your true colour identity. (Read how to do your own colour analysis here).

This is why, when you book your colour analysis service with Zazu Feu, we ask you to provide a few draping photos in your submission form, so we can correctly determine what the most important colour feature your complexion beholds.

Celebrity Examples Of Deep Skin and Light Colour Seasons

As in my colour analysis system I don't use seasons, let me introduce you to the Colour Flowers which are much more fun and contemporary alternative to the seasonal system that was created more than forty years ago:

As you can see the lightest Colour Flowers are Periwinkle (cool undertone) and Buttercup (warm undertone). They are light not only because their representatives' complexions are light but because very light colours suit their skin best.

And if you think that light colours aren't for you, have a look at these celebrity examples:

Zendaya Colour Analysis

When I began analysing Zendaya's colours from the perspective of colour harmony, I noticed that she quite successfully wears heavy, deep-coloured makeup, which has led many people to believe she's a dark colour season (Dark Autumn, for example).

However, what I've noticed is that she tends to wear such heavy makeup mainly to support the deep colours in her clothing, which otherwise wouldn't harmonise with her natural colouring.

I went through a few of her photos on Pinterest before I realised that Zendaya is definitely warm and, surprisingly, light. In Zazu Feu's colour analysis system, she is a... Buttercup.

Just look how glowy her skin looks next to this bright light shade of yellow!

And surprisingly, blonde looks stunning on her too – something that only light colour types can really pull off!

A Buttercup's colour palette is light and warm. Think sunlit yellows, pea greens, peaches and corals, light teals, and soft lavender shades. Their palette usually has a little more depth than the truly pastel, almost angelic palette of the Periwinkle colour flower.

And at this point, you're probably thinking: no way! Dark skin and the lightest palette? Why not?

Doja Cat Colour Analysis

I'll be honest, it may be a little less common among people of colour, but it does happen. Just look at Doja Cat.

She looks incredible in cool-toned pastels. Even platinum blonde looks remarkably natural on her. Like all Periwinkles, she tends to struggle with earthy shades and warm makeup when they lack lightness, glow, and radiance.

Even if your skin tone is darker, you can still belong to one of the light colour types — or be a beautiful mid-tone.

Why This Matters For Women of Colour

If you have dark skin and have been telling yourself that colour analysis "isn't really for people like me," this is the post that should change your mind.

The traditional system was imperfect in how it represented darker skin tones. But the underlying colour theory, the science of undertone and depth, applies to every skin tone on earth. What changes is how those factors are interpreted, and that is exactly where working with a skilled colour analyst makes all the difference.

A professional colour analysis does not look at your skin tone and make an assumption. It looks at how your skin, eyes, and hair respond to colour and that tells a completely different story.

The Zazu Feu Approach

At Zazu Feu, I use my own Colour Flowers system — a more nuanced approach than the traditional four or even twelve season models. Rather than forcing every person into a broad category, the Colour Flowers system identifies the specific quality that is most dominant in your colouring: whether that is warmth, coolness, softness, brightness, lightness, or depth.

I offer colour analysis services online, so wherever you are, you can discover your true colours.

Ready to Find Out Your Own Best Colours

If you've been wondering whether colour analysis can work for your skin tone, the answer is yes, and it might surprise you. Many of my clients come in expecting one result and discover something entirely different, something that finally explains why certain colours make them feel radiant and others leave them flat.

Or if you'd like to start exploring, [take a look at the Colour Flowers system here — Colour Types] to get a sense of the different colour types and which might feel most like you.

Zazu Feu offers professional colour analysis for all skin tones, available online worldwide.
