The interesting thing is that if you open almost any article or comment section about Dita, the reactions are overwhelmingly positive. People describe her as stunning, sophisticated, charming, inspiring. They love her style, her black hair, her red lips, her dramatic colour choices…
But once you step into the world of traditional seasonal colour analysis, suddenly the conversation changes.
From what I’ve seen, people endlessly debate whether she’s a Spring or a Summer. But honestly, it hardly matters because in both systems she’s often told that black hair is “too harsh,” that bold colours near the face are “too overpowering,” and that she should avoid many of the very features that make her look so unique and unmistakably herself.
And this is exactly what I never wanted colour analysis to become.
At Zazu Feu, colour analysis is not about restricting people or stripping away their individuality. I would never want to tell someone, “Sorry, you’re pale, so you can only wear X and Y.” The truth is: almost any colour can work if it’s styled intelligently and harmonised with the rest of your colouring.

What Color Season Is Dita Von Teese?

That coolness is exactly why (no matter how "nude" her looks is) she still appears polished, elegant, and almost porcelain-like in a beautiful, theatrical way. What Is the Columbine Colour Type?
The Columbine is one of the six Zazu Feu Colour Flowers and it's one of the most frequently misidentified types in traditional colour analysis.
Columbine is mid-tone and cool. This means:
Cool undertones throughout the complexion — no yellow or golden quality to the skin
A mid-range depth — neither particularly light nor particularly deep
Natural colouring that tends toward the neutral-to-cool range, with moderate contrast
What distinguishes Columbine from the other cool Colour Flowers is that middle ground. Periwinkle is lighter and more delicate — pastel shades and soft, airy tones are their natural habitat. Hellebore is deeper and more dramatic — they carry very dark colours and very high contrast with ease. Columbine sits between these two: they have enough depth to carry richer, more saturated colours, but not so much that they need very dark shades to avoid looking washed out.
Dita sits squarely in the Columbine zone. She has real presence and depth to her colouring, but she isn't as inherently dramatic as a true Hellebore. The darkness in her look is largely created — the black hair, the theatrical makeup — rather than coming naturally from very deep features. And when those artificial elements are removed, as the Halloween experiment showed, her natural colouring is considerably softer.

Why Does Black Hair Colour Suit Dita Von Teese If She's Not a Winter Colour Season?
When it comes to Columbines, they can actually suit a surprisingly wide range of hair colours as long as those shades stay neutral to cool-toned.
Natural hair colour often looks beautiful on them, but many people feel it isn’t “dramatic enough.” So they darken it slightly… which can work wonderfully at first. The problem is that many darker dyes gradually fade into warm chocolate or orange tones, and suddenly the whole face begins to look redder and less harmonious.
So honestly, it makes complete sense that Dita eventually thought: if dark ash brown always fades warm anyway, why not go fully black instead?
Especially since she famously dyes her hair herself using box dye.
And black works beautifully with her dramatic style. It beautifully pairs with cool berry tones and deep theatrical colours without introducing unnecessary warmth.
Columbines with higher contrast or stronger saturation can absolutely pull off black hair. It may not look “natural” in the traditional sense though.

Deep teal and cool green — mid-to-deep teal is one of the most striking colours for Columbine types. It creates beautiful contrast against cool, light-to-medium skin without pulling warm.

Can You Be A Cool Colour Season If You Have Freckles Like Dita Von Teese?
One of the most persistent myths in colour analysis is that freckles automatically mean a warm season. It's easy to see why because freckles are associated with red hair, golden skin, and sun-kissed warmth, all of which do point toward Spring or Autumn types. But freckles appear across all skin tones and undertones, including distinctly cool ones. A Columbine, for example, can absolutely have freckles because what defines them is a fully cool undertone, not the absence of freckles. If your skin has a clear pink or rosy quality and cool vivid colours make your complexion come alive, you may well be a cool season. What matters in colour analysis is never one feature in isolation.
