How to Look Unrecognisable at Halloween Without Buying a Costume

Autumn in the UK is my favourite season, and Halloween is the best part of it. You won't catch me in a witch hat or as Beetlejuice, but I admire anyone who commits to a truly elaborate look. Heidi Klum is Halloween royalty for a reason.

But there is an easier route to unrecognisable, and it costs almost nothing...

What about wearing the colours that don't suit you?

Why wrong colours work as a costume

Let's go back to our favourite topics: color analysis. As you know every colour type has shades that make their skin look clear and rested, and shades that do the opposite. The wrong ones pull out shadows, makes your skin look too pale or yellow, and the face reads as a different face. And even though on a normal day you avoid that, on Halloween it can actually serve its purpose. Let's see how.

The Dita Von Teese method

That's what I'd like to call this method and here's why.

Dita Von Teese is a Columbine in the Zazu Feu system, so her best colours are cool-toned: lavender, cool blues, silver, raspberry red and emerald. Her pale skin, glossy black hair and red lip suit that quite well, and it's why she should steer clear of heavy bronzer. (Curious? Read her full colour analysis here.)

Every Halloween she does the reverse. She becomes her blonde, faux-tanned, nude-glossed alter ego. It actually changes her look so much that her own friends don't recognise her, and she has said the look takes a lot of highlighter, bronzer and gloss. Everything that she doesn't usually wear. So, even though she's the same woman, wrong colours make her look like a completely different person.

Your wrong-colour Halloween look

So, how to find your Halloween look by using wrong colors?

This can help:

If your best colours are cool-toned, go for the undead bride, a subtle "pumpkin" edition. Wear a foundation a shade warmer and yellower than yours, add soft bronzer, and finish with a beige or peach-nude lip. For the outfit, choose a cream or ivory dress, a camel or khaki knit, gold jewellery and a tattered veil. Wearing the opposite of your best colours makes your face read as someone else.

If your best colours are warm, go for the Cullen family. Use a cool-toned, pale base with no bronzer, and an icy or silvery-pink pearl lip. Wear slate, charcoal, icy blue or silver head to toe, with silver jewellery. Or channel Wednesday Addams, as played by warm-toned Jenna Ortega. (btw, her color analysis is here).

On deeper skin tones, keep it about undertone rather than going paler unless you really want to scare someone's socks off!

Flip your contrast too. If you're normally high contrast (dark hair, bright lip), go faded: one soft mid-tone from head to toe, matte pale lip, a lighter wig. If you're normally low contrast, go full femme fatale with black, a strong lip and a dark wig. Bring more fun!

Zazu Feu color analysis types

No worries if you have no idea what color analysis is and what color type you are. At Zazu Feu we use our own colour system including six color flowers (three of them are cool-toned and three are warm-toned):

Halloween outfit ideas from clothes you already own

  • The wrong-colour outfit: wear your worst shade head to toe. Cool types, try mustard, orange or rust. Warm types, try icy pink, stark white or silver-grey.

  • Skeleton, done properly: all-black clothes you already own, with skull makeup. It's one of the most-searched costumes every year, so the makeup is what makes it stand out.

  • Devil Wears Prada: a red dress, horns and a designer-looking bag. For a colour analysis twist, pick the red furthest from your undertone.

  • Wednesday: a black dress with a white collar and braids. The character is still all over the searches this year. Perfect if in real life you're a blonde who avoids high contrasts (Jenna Ortega's color analysis).

  • Trending characters: Rumi from KPop Demon Hunters, Elphaba and Glinda from Wicked, and Squid Game jumpsuits for groups all rank high in this year's searches. For Wicked, choose the green or the pink that's furthest from your palette.

How to do Halloween on a budget

  • Shop your makeup bag first. The beige lipstick you never wear finally gets a job.

  • Buy pieces from charity shops, Vinted or eBay that you can wear again, rather than single-use polyester.

  • Borrow a wig or swap costumes with friends.

  • Spend on one thing only (a wig, a veil), not a whole outfit.

  • Use cosmetic-grade products on skin, patch test anything old, and bin expired eye makeup.

FAQs

What is the easiest unrecognisable Halloween look?

Wear the opposite of your best colours. A wrong-colour foundation, lip and outfit, plus a wig, changes your face without a costume.

What is a good last-minute Halloween costume from my wardrobe?

A skeleton in all-black clothes with makeup, Wednesday with a white collar, or a head-to-toe wrong-colour outfit.

Can wearing the wrong colours really change how you look?

Yes. Colour reflects onto the face, and a clashing undertone can make skin look sallow, grey or shadowed. It's why Dita becomes unrecognisable as Dina for Halloween.

How do I know if I'm cool or warm toned?

Not from hair and eye colour. Two people with the same features can be opposite seasons. If you have light brown hair you can easily be any of four color seasons or Color Flowers.

How do I save money on Halloween?

Use clothes and makeup you own, buy secondhand, and spend on one statement piece.
