Does Colour Analysis Work for Men?

You've probably heard of colour analysis in the context of women's fashion. But here's the thing: colour analysis applies just as much to men. Your skin tone, eye colour, and natural hair colour all determine which shades make you look sharp, healthy, and put-together, and which ones make you look tired, washed out, and, I have to say this, older than you really are.

Colour analysis is simply the process of identifying which colours work with your natural colouring. And the results can be quietly transformative, and for women, and for men.

Why Most Men Are Getting Colour Wrong

Most men build a wardrobe based on what they like, what's on sale, or what they've always worn. Navy, grey, black, white... doesn't it sound familiar? The problem is that these colours don't work equally well on everyone. A cool-toned charcoal grey can make one man look great, and another man look exhausted before he's even had his morning coffee.

This is why it's important to find the colours that work for you.

What Colour Analysis Actually Involves For Men

colour analysis includes: undertone, colour saturation, depth and level of contrast

Colour analysis looks at three things about your natural colouring:

Undertone — whether your skin has warm (golden, peachy) or cool (pink, bluish) undertones.

Read our blog post on neutral undertone next.

Depth — how light or deep your overall colouring is, from fair skin and light hair to deep skin and dark hair (but this doesn't mean that it automatically makes you a light or deep colour type btw).

Contrast — the difference between your skin tone, hair, and eyes. Some men have very similar tones across all three; others have striking contrast between a dark beard and light eyes, for example.

These three factors together determine your colour type and the colours that will consistently make you look your best.

Is Colour Analysis Only For Women?

In my experience, men are often more hesitant than women when it comes to booking a colour analysis. They see it as something feminine like it's a tool designed for women, built around women's wardrobes, and simply not relevant to men.

I'm not surprised as colour analysis was originally marketed almost exclusively to women but, fortunately, it was never actually about gender. The underlying principles (how your skin tone, eye colour, and hair interact with the colours around them) apply to every face, regardless of who it belongs to.

I'm happy to say though that things are changing. More men are seeking out colour analysis now because they feel more comfortable acknowledging that they care about how they look and want to feel good in what they wear.

Colour analysis is a practical tool. It works for anyone, regardless of gender, background, sexuality or personal style.

What Changes When You Know Your Colours

When men wear their best colours what usually happens is:

- Skin looks clearer and healthier

- Eyes appear more vivid and defined

- The overall impression is more put-together, without trying harder

- Colours in the wardrobe start to work together naturally

It also makes getting dressed easier. When you know which colours work for you, you stop wasting money on things you never quite feel right in.

Does Colour Analysis Include Neutrals?

This is the question most men have. Colour analysis doesn't mean abandoning your neutrals, it means finding your neutrals.

Some of you will look amazing in warm camel, soft tan, or a rich brown, while the others will do well with greys, taupe, ash browns and black. Colour analysis just helps to find which category you belong to.

A Client Story

One client came to me having worn an icy blue shirt to his PR job for years. Blue felt like the right choice because it signals trust, credibility and professionalism. However, that particular shade of icy blue was working against him. Colleagues kept telling him he looked tired, asking whether he was taking on too much, suggesting he needed a holiday.

He turned out to be what I call a Marigold — a warm colour type that comes alive in orange, tomato red, warm green, and rich brown. But he liked blue, and blue made sense for his work. So we didn't remove it — we simply found blues that worked with his colouring rather than against it. Shades like warm teal (which leans slightly green rather than icy), denim blue, and warm sapphire. They are blues with enough warmth in them to sit comfortably against golden undertones, rather than the cool, almost-silver quality of icy blue that was draining him.

Within a few weeks, the comments changed. Colleagues told him he seemed different, more rested and energised. He won two significant new clients that quarter because he'd felt more confident going into those pitches than he had in a long time. That's how important the right colours are. They can give you a presence you hadn't known you were missing.

What Does Zazu Feu Colour Analysis Service Involve?

Zazu Feu colour analysis comes in three tiers, so you can choose the level that suits your needs and budget.

Bloom Colour Analysis is where your colour journey begins. We establish the foundations of your colour identity whether your natural colouring sits on the warm or cool side, how much contrast you carry, and how much saturation your complexion can hold. Some complexions are naturally soft and muted; others are vivid and bright. Knowing this shapes every colour decision you make.

Blossom Colour Analysis goes deeper. As well as everything in Bloom, this tier is tailored to the way you actually dress. We use real photos of you, so we can show you how your existing style translates into your best colours, so you can see the difference in context, not just in theory. You'll also receive your 15 most signature shades to keep as a personal reference.

Flourish Colour Analysis is our most complete offering. Everything from Blossom, plus a wider range of personalised looks and a full palette of 50 signature shades, so you can shop with complete confidence, every time.

Getting started is simple. All you need to do is prepare a few draping photos: gather some fabric swatches in warm, cool, dark, and light tones, hold them next to your face in natural daylight, and take a clear photo where your eye colour is visible. Then complete our submission form, adding your draping photos alongside six everyday photos of yourself: these help us read your colouring in the context of your clothing, style, and personality.

Is Colour Analysis Just About Clothing?

Not at all. Some men find it changes how they think about grooming too: knowing whether warm or cool tones suit them better can inform everything from beard colour (if they dye it) to the tones in their eyewear frames.

What Kind Of Man Is Colour Analysis For?

Colour analysis is a great tool for any man who wants to dress better without overthinking it. You don't need to be interested in fashion or have a big wardrobe budget. All you need is to be curious about looking and feeling your best.

At Zazu Feu, I work with men using my unique Colour Flowers system — a more nuanced approach to colour typing than the traditional four seasons.
